Where Wild Elephants Roam Free.
An Unspoiled Safari Sanctuary.
Discover one of Sri Lanka’s premier elephant sanctuaries. Connected to Minneriya through a vital wildlife corridor, Kaudulla offers breathtaking safari encounters where vast herds gather around the historic Kaudulla Tank amidst tranquil grasslands.
The Heart of Sri Lanka’s Elephant Migration Corridor
Established as a national park in 2002, Kaudulla National Park spans over 6,900 hectares of dry-evergreen forests, riverine habitats, and open grasslands. It plays a critical role as a safe wildlife haven connected directly to Minneriya and Hurulu Eco Park through a protected jungle corridor.
At the center of this sanctuary is the ancient Kaudulla Reservoir (Tank), built by King Mahasena. During the dry season (particularly from August to December), when water levels in neighboring parks recede, massive herds of over 200 to 300 wild Asian elephants migrate to Kaudulla’s fertile banks to feed on fresh, succulent grass and cool off in the reservoir.
Riding in an open 4x4 safari Jeep, you will experience an intimate, uncrowded wildlife journey—watching gentle giants graze peacefully alongside spotted deer, water monitors, and a vibrant spectrum of aquatic birds.
