Witness Nature’s Greatest Spectacle.
The Gathering of Giants.
Embrace the untamed heart of Sri Lanka’s dry zone. Home to the world-renowned "Elephant Gathering," Minneriya offers an unparalleled 4x4 safari experience where wild Asian elephant herds roam vast grasslands alongside an ancient 3rd-century reservoir.
The Heart of Sri Lanka’s Wildlife Corridor
Spanning 8,890 hectares of dry-evergreen forests, scrublands, and open grasslands, Minneriya National Park is world-famous for harboring one of the greatest natural events on Earth: The Great Elephant Gathering.
At the park's core lies the ancient Minneriya Reservoir (Tank), built over 1,700 years ago by King Mahasena. As the dry season progresses, the water level recedes, giving way to lush, nutrient-rich "elephant grass". Driven by the need for fresh water and food, over 300 to 400 wild Asian elephants migrate from surrounding sanctuaries to gather along these open shorelines.
Riding in a private, open-top 4x4 jeep, you'll observe matriarch-led herds, playful baby calves splashing in the shallows, young bulls wrestling for dominance, and graceful water birds fluttering along the shoreline.
